A story of generations of families and the special place they live in, where they share love, loss, laughter and life. Based on the comic strip “Here” by Richard McGuire. The comic strip was first published as a strip in Raw comic book magazine in 1989 and expanded into a 300-page graphic novel in 2014. At the beginning of the film, Richard’s father names several towns that he says are along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, when in reality they are towns on Pennsylvania’s Interstate 80, which had not even been built at the time. [from the trailer] Richard: You know, if you want, you can spend the rest of the night here. Margaret: I could spend the rest of my life here. Includes They Stooge to Conga (1943). Concerto for Clarinet, Pts. 1 and 2 Written by Artie Shaw Performed by Artie Shaw and his Orchestra Courtesy of RCA Records In association with Sony Music Entertainment. LIKED: Good actingRealistic in many aspects of life. Dynamic use of set/setting Creative transitions Rejuvenating technique Sometimes fascinating connections I liked it from an artistic perspective. Here is a film that is truly one of the most unique concepts we have seen in a long time. The film is based on enjoying the fixation on a single camera/location and telling a story about the effects of time on life and the people moving through it. Zemeckis accomplished this task on many levels, managing to make good use of the space and keep the shot dynamic despite its static nature. The dynamic scene changes make this work fascinating in the idea that the furniture changes are a striking feature in the house itself, acting as a metaphorical window into life. I loved seeing this space inhabited and seeing the families who called the villa home, how their interactions, auras and personalities put the scene in a different light and told their own micro-stories. The transitions were done through the outlines of the photographs that drew attention before moving on to the next scene. The technique is smooth and rarely over the top for me. There were many creative aspects, but it never lost its anchor in realism to make this a beautiful, balanced piece. In terms of story and acting, the A-list talent helped bring this film to life and achieve its goal of looking at life. This is a film that relies heavily on being relevant, and on the actors to bring meaning to life. Historically, he rarely deviates from the people who lived their lives, but instead takes snippets from different eras and projects them through time. The highs and lows are beautifully captured on screen, and Zemeckis’ vision helps convey the concepts and hit you with the emotion this film promises. When the relevant stories hit me, it only strengthened my connection to the film and I found myself thinking about what this film was trying to teach me. The acting gives words to the visions, and much of the dialogue is poetic without being too Shakespearean. Bettany was a surprise, and while it’s not quite as compelling or dynamic as his Disney film, it still impressed me with its excellent portrayal of a baby boomer generation facing rapid changes in the world. Wright’s return to the big screen is wild, as his character is torn between amusement and rage. It’s a brilliant portrayal of the struggles that so many in his place had to endure during the great decades. Of course, Hanks is just as talented as ever, and he weaves elements of his other characters into every moment of their lives, and he does it with the same class and energy that he almost always brings to the screen. It’s a chemistry that works, this family atmosphere seems so natural and almost authentic, with strong leads guiding the characters and never going too far into Hollywood depictions.
